Assuming your brother was responsible is different than actually knowing he is. Until Dane confirmed it, I still had this spark of hope it was someone, anyone, else. I stand on tiptoe, then tug on Brant’s hand so he’ll lean down. “Thank you,” I whisper before kissing his cheek, needing him to know we’re okay.

“You aren’t mad?”

“At you?” He nods. “Why would I be?”

“I wouldn’t let Dane tell you today.”

“For no other reason than because you care about me. How could I be upset about that?” What feels like a sigh of relief ruffles my hair as he wraps his arms around me, and the fact he did what he did all the while knowing I might not react kindly to it makes it the perfect time to say the words that pour out of me. “I love you, Brant.” Neither of us are aware of Dane leaving the room, nor Aurora who’d come in to see what was going on when I didn’t immediately return with our eggnog. Brant and I were too lost in the world we’d created for the two of us.

“I love you, too, Macie,” he replies, lifting me to eye level and placing a sweet kiss on my lips. “I’m sorry I tried to make this decision for you.”

Shaking my head, I want to make this very clear, “You made it to give me a day of happiness before reality forced its way back into my life. In this case,” I shrug, unsure how to get him to see what he did was a gesture of love, “you put me first. Do you know how long it’s been since somebody did that? He shakes his head no. “Seven years, five months, and two days.”

I can see him mentally doing the math, and when he realizes the significance. “When Raymond saved you.”

“As you tried to do just now, albeit in a different way, but the love behind it is still there.”

“Tonight, will you stay with me? We don’t have to do anything if you aren’t ready for it, but I want to fall asleep with you in my arms.”

This man, the body of a warrior with a heart to match. “I may have a lot of energy to burn from all the sugar I plan on consuming,” I tease.

“Baby, I’ll give you all the sugar you could ever want,” and then he follows through on that vow by literally stealing my breath.

When we eventually return to our guests, Brant sits on the couch and pulls me onto his lap. I try to move, worried our position might make Aurora uncomfortable, but she seems to guess my train of thought and immediately puts it to rest. “You two are so perfect together,” she gushes. “I can’t wait to call you my sister.” Then she looks at Dane, as if he has all the answers, and asks, “Do I have to? Can I just start saying she is now?”

Dane chuckles, and, proving he can deny her nothing, says, “You can have whatever your heart desires, Rory.
